Gripfast was engaged under the Department of Education to deliver the construction of Darling Point Special School’s new three-storey learning centre. Situated on the coastal edge of Manly Esplanade, the project was driven by a strong commitment to inclusive and accessible design, creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for students with a wide range of physical and cognitive needs.
This complex development includes 14 General Learning Areas, a Manual Arts Room, Teaching and Staff Collaboration Room, and Junior and Senior Playgrounds to support the school’s unprecedented growth. Each GLA was fitted with specialist hoist systems and hearing-impaired speaker phone technology that ensures classrooms are adaptable, durable and equipped to meet both current and future needs.
Delivering the project within an active school environment required vital planning and close coordination to safeguard student well-being throughout construction. Acoustic panel screening was installed to minimise noise and visual disruption. As the project neared completion, focus shifted to long-term student safety, including the installation of custom-fabricated fire hydrant enclosures, designed to prevent climbing whilst maintaining egress compliance.
With high accessibility and safety guiding both construction and occupation. Gripfast prioritised consistent communication with all stakeholders. Through ongoing collaboration with school staff and students, and the project team, concerns were proactively addressed, and solutions openly discussed – ensuring the school’s vision of a secure, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment was fully realised.
