If you had told me almost two years ago that I would find my current job through LinkedIn, I probably would have been very surprised. At the time, I thought LinkedIn was mostly a place to upload your résumé, follow a few companies, and collect polite “connections” from people you met at networking events.

Then one day, I got a message from David.

It was exam season — peak stress — and my brain was already juggling more caffeine than common sense. Usually, I would not have replied. But David’s message was different. It was about a potential job opportunity that sounded interesting. Still, I was in the middle of exams, so I told myself I would deal with it later.

My friend, who was studying with me at the time, mentioned that her friend had actually landed a job through LinkedIn and was loving it. That planted a seed. Maybe this platform was worth taking seriously after all.

So, I did what any cautious person would do, I did some research to make sure David was a legitimate Brisbane employer. Once I confirmed he was, I sent him a message thanking him for reaching out and he asked if we could connect after exams. I agreed.

And here we are today.

If it were not for the rise of LinkedIn in recruitment, I would not be in one of the best jobs I have ever worked at.

Why LinkedIn Works

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network, with more than 400 million users worldwide. It gives professionals a space to share their career stories, highlight their skills, and connect with people across industries. It is more than just a digital résumé; it is a living network of opportunity.

Interestingly, research shows that the key to LinkedIn’s career benefits is not how many connections you have but how often you use it. Frequent engagement, posting, joining groups, and interacting with others are what really drive results.

In other words, it is not just about being on LinkedIn. It is about using LinkedIn.

The Australian Context

In Australia, the importance of professional networking platforms like LinkedIn has grown significantly since COVID-19. When lockdowns disrupted traditional recruitment and networking opportunities, employers and job seekers turned online.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, youth unemployment among Australians aged 20 to 24 saw one of its sharpest rises during this period. LinkedIn became a key player in bridging that gap and helping people stay visible and connected when opportunities felt scarce.

For many, LinkedIn became the new handshake, the new business card, and the new first impression.

LinkedIn and Recruitment

From an employer’s perspective, LinkedIn has completely changed the recruitment process. It allows businesses to find passive candidates, those who may not be actively job hunting but are open to the right opportunity. For companies, this means a wider pool of talent and a more efficient recruitment process.

For job seekers, it means you no longer have to wait for the perfect job ad to appear. You can put yourself out there, share your work, and let recruiters find you.

And the best part? You can do it all without leaving your desk.

Why It Matters

What makes LinkedIn so powerful is its ability to make professional growth accessible to everyone. You can connect with people across the world, follow leaders in your field, learn from industry experts, and even get noticed for your ideas.

It is a place where opportunities are built through conversation, consistency, and curiosity.

So, if you have been meaning to update your profile, reach out to someone new, or reply to that message sitting in your inbox, consider this your nudge. You never know, one message could be the start of something career-changing.

Full Circle

And now, here I am, writing a LinkedIn post about getting a job through LinkedIn, to share on LinkedIn for the job I got through LinkedIn. Talk about Linked-In-ception.

But maybe that is the beauty of it. The more we connect, the more we learn, the more opportunities appear, and sometimes, they come full circle.

So, here’s to the messages you almost ignore, the connections you are yet to make, and the posts that remind you why this platform works.

Because who knows? Your next big opportunity might already be sitting in your inbox.
